Sculpfun SF-A9 review: a fast 40W cutter that measured 41W
An open-frame 40 W (switchable to 20 W) diode laser, $799.99. Measured 41 W, cut 10 mm plywood in one pass and nearly cut a 44 mm plank; the spot is large for fine engraving.

Our verdict
The SF-A9 is one of the strongest 40W diode cutters. Hobby Laser Cutters measured 41W, cut 10 mm plywood in one pass at 300 mm/min, and found it the fastest 40W they had tested, beating the xTool S1 and D1 Pro on 6 mm plywood. The spot is larger than rivals, so fine photo engraving is weaker, and the front frame makes placing work awkward. For cutting on a budget, it is a top pick.
What we like
- Measured 41W optical output; 20W mode for finer work
- 10 mm plywood in one pass at 300 mm/min
- Beat the xTool S1 and D1 Pro 40W on 6 mm plywood
- Steel Y rollers, linear X rail and best-in-class focus retention
- Low-idle air assist keeps the lens clean; flame and tilt sensors
What could be better
- Larger spot: weaker on sub-millimetre detail and photos
- Air pump hums constantly while the laser is on
- Front frame hides the nozzle, making placement hard
- Open frame: needs goggles, enclosure or a dedicated room
- Sculpfun’s own app offers little control; plan on LightBurn

What is it?
The SF-A9 is Sculpfun’s 40W open-frame laser. Eight diodes combine for 40W, and a switch drops it to 20W (four diodes) for a finer spot. It has a heat-pipe cooler, steel rollers and a full set of safety sensors.
It costs $799.99 on the US store (list $1,699.99).
Tests
Hobby Laser Cutters tested it in March 2024 with a power meter:
- Power: 41W optical at the 40W setting, slightly above spec; the 20W mode was on spec.
- 10 mm plywood: one pass at 300 mm/min, or two at 600 mm/min.
- 10 mm black acrylic: 6 passes. 3 mm black acrylic: just over one pass.
- 17 mm pine: 4 passes; 18 mm spruce: under 6 passes at 600 mm/min.
- A 44 mm spruce plank was cut through except for one corner.
It nearly matched the xTool S1 on 3 mm plywood, beat both the S1 and the xTool D1 Pro 40W on 6 mm, and was the fastest 40W diode the reviewer had tested.
Engraving
The spot is larger at best focus than rivals, so sub-millimetre detail suffers, and low-power engraving is slightly weaker in 40W mode. Switch to 20W mode for photos and fine text, or pick a lower-power laser if engraving is your main job.
Design and software
The Diode Laser Wiki notes the revised mechanics: limit switches on both axes, belt tensioners and tidy cabling. Air assist idles at 10% to keep the lens clean, but that means a constant pump hum. The bulky front frame hides the nozzle tip, which makes placement awkward. Sculpfun’s app offers little control, so most owners use LightBurn (about $60) or free LaserGRBL.
Who should not buy it
- Anyone who mostly engraves photos.
- Anyone without a safe, ventilated space.
vs rivals
- vs Creality Falcon2 40W ($639): cheaper, with fewer independent cutting tests. See SF-A9 vs Falcon2 40W.
- vs Sculpfun S70 Max ($1,599): twice the price for 70W and a huge bed.
- vs xTool S1: enclosed and more polished, but the SF-A9 cut 6 mm plywood faster.
Final thoughts
If cutting is your main job, the SF-A9 is one of the best 40W diode lasers you can buy, especially at the current price.
